Steven Moffat announced at a Doctor Who press conference on 21 March that Coleman, who had replaced Karen Gillan as the companion of the Doctor since Arthur Darvill left the series, would be playing the role of Matt Smith. Moffat said that he chose Coleman to be the companion because she could perform best alongside Smith. In addition, Moffat noted that she talked faster than Smith.
